India’s electric vehicle story just hit a new high. Dealers sold a record 3.55 lakh electric vehicles in October 2026, the best monthly EV tally the country has ever recorded, according to FADA data released on Friday. The surge pushed the EV share of India’s vehicle market to 11.5 per cent, nearly double the 6 per cent it stood at in the same month last year.
The record came in a month when the overall market actually shrank. Total vehicle retail stood at 31.72 lakh units in October, down 23.8 per cent from a year ago. The fall had little to do with weak demand and everything to do with the calendar. Dhanteras and Diwali fell in October last year; this year Dhanteras was on November 6 and Diwali falls on November 8, so much of the festive buying simply moved into November.
The numbers behind the record
The figure covers every category, from electric scooters to electric cars and three-wheelers. In the passenger vehicle segment, cars running on alternative fuels, which includes CNG, hybrid and electric models, together accounted for 41.83 per cent of sales in October. Petrol cars accounted for 41.6 per cent, while diesel models held just 16.57 per cent.
- EV sales: 3.55 lakh units in October, an all-time monthly high
- EV market share: 11.5 per cent, up from 6 per cent a year ago
- Alternative-fuel cars: 41.83 per cent of passenger vehicle sales, ahead of petrol at 41.6 per cent
- Diesel cars: 16.57 per cent of passenger vehicle sales
- Total vehicle retail: 31.72 lakh units, down 23.8 per cent year on year but up nearly 25 per cent month on month

Why October still fell overall
The headline drop in total sales needs context. Two-wheeler retail fell 28.35 per cent to 23.21 lakh units and passenger vehicle sales slipped 4.23 per cent to 5.08 lakh units, but both declines reflect the festival shift rather than a collapse in buying. Last October had Navratri, Dussehra, Dhanteras and Diwali all packed into one month, on top of the boost from the GST rate cut.
Look closer and the month was strong in places. Commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and tractors all recorded their best-ever October, FADA said. Passenger vehicle sales of 5.08 lakh units marked the third-best October on record. Dealers are already seeing the November payoff, with Maruti Suzuki expecting around 30,000 Dhanteras deliveries and Tata Motors over 12,000 in a single day.
Petrol loses the lead in passenger cars
The most important number in FADA’s October report may not be the EV total at all. It is the 41.83 per cent share for alternative-fuel passenger vehicles. Three fuel types now split the car market almost evenly, and petrol is no longer the biggest of the three.
Buyers have been drifting toward CNG for running costs, hybrids for efficiency and EVs as prices fall, and October was the month those choices tipped the balance.
The real problem now is supply, not demand
FADA president Sai Giridhar said demand for electric vehicles currently exceeds production in both the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle categories. “It is not demand, it is availability which is a major constraint as far as electric vehicles are concerned,” he said.
That is a very different problem from the one the industry faced a few years ago, when the question was whether Indians would buy EVs at all. Carmakers are now racing to build enough of them. The October numbers suggest the buyers are already there.
Dealers remain cautiously optimistic. FADA expects nearly 3.2 crore total vehicle sales in calendar year 2026, up about 10 per cent on last year, with passenger vehicle retail crossing five million units for the first time.
What this means for buyers
For buyers, the practical signals are simple: waiting lists for popular EV models may stay long, choice keeps widening, and resale values for older petrol-only cars could come under pressure. Petrol is not finished, it still accounts for more than four in ten passenger cars sold, but October 2026 will be remembered as the month the electric shift showed up in the sales registers.
