Jharkhand Police Dog Squad held a special ceremony on Tuesday to honour and retire four of its canine members, who have served the state for over six years. The four dogs, namely Raja, Rocky, Rani and Rinku, were given a guard of honour, a cake cutting, and a certificate of appreciation by the senior police officials.
The four dogs belonged to different breeds and had different roles in the squad. Raja, a Doberman, was a tracker who helped in tracing criminals and missing persons. Rocky, a Labrador, was a sniffer who specialized in detecting explosives. Rani, a German Shepherd, was also a sniffer who detected narcotics. Rinku, another Labrador, was a sniffer who detected human remains.
The four dogs joined the squad in 2017, after undergoing rigorous training at the Police Dog Training Centre in Ranchi. They participated in several operations across the state, and helped in solving many cases of crime and terrorism. They also assisted in disaster management and rescue operations.
The Jharkhand Police Dog Squad has a total of 21 dogs, of which 14 are trained to find explosives, six to collect evidence from crime sites, and one to track drugs and narcotics. The squad is one of the oldest and most reputed in the country, and has been operational since 1963.
The retiring dogs will be adopted by their handlers, who have formed a strong bond with them over the years. The handlers will take care of their health and well-being, and provide them with a comfortable and loving home. The squad will also recruit and train new dogs to replace the retired ones, and continue to serve the state with dedication and loyalty.
