Come Sunday, October 11, the sound of dandiya sticks will take over housing societies, the smell of ghee diyas will fill living rooms, and India’s biggest festive season will officially begin. Sharad Navratri 2026 starts this weekend: nine nights dedicated to Goddess Durga that millions across the country wait for all year.
From all-night Garba in Ahmedabad to pandal-hopping in Kolkata, here is everything you need to know, from the full date-wise calendar to what each day means, how the fast actually works, and where the celebrations are biggest.
Navratri 2026 Dates: The Full 9-Day Calendar
Each of the nine nights honours a different form of the goddess, together known as the Navadurga. Mark these dates:
- October 11 (Sunday), Day 1: Ghatasthapana. The kalash is installed, barley is sown, and the fast begins with Maa Shailputri.
- October 12 (Monday), Day 2: Maa Brahmacharini, the goddess of devotion and penance.
- October 13 (Tuesday), Day 3: Maa Chandraghanta, the warrior who fights evil.
- October 14 (Wednesday), Day 4: Maa Kushmanda, believed to have sparked creation itself.
- October 15 (Thursday), Day 5: Maa Skandamata, mother of Kartikeya.
- October 16 (Friday), Day 6: Maa Katyayani.
- October 17 (Saturday), Day 7: Maa Kalaratri, the fiercest form, destroyer of darkness.
- October 18 (Sunday), Day 8: Durga Ashtami, Maa Mahagauri. Most families perform Kanya Puja today.
- October 19 (Monday), Day 9: Maha Navami, Maa Siddhidatri. The fast ends.
And then, on Tuesday, October 20, comes Dussehra. Ravan Dahan, sindoor khela and the Mysuru Dasara procession bring the curtains down.
What Navratri Actually Celebrates
Strip away the fairy lights and it is a simple, powerful story: Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. Good beating evil. That is why the festival cuts across regions. Bengal calls it Durga Puja and celebrates the goddess coming home, Tamil Nadu sets up Bommai Golu doll displays, and Gujarat simply dances for nine straight nights.
The Fast: What You Can (and Can’t) Eat
The Navratri vrat is not starvation. It is a very specific diet. Here is the practical version:
Allowed: sabudana, kuttu and singhara flour, samak rice, potatoes, sweet potato, peanuts, makhana, all fruits, milk and curd. Salt? Only sendha namak. Regular table salt is out.
Not allowed: wheat, rice, dal, onion, garlic, meat, eggs, alcohol. Many families also skip haircuts during the nine days, an old custom plenty of people still follow.
Plenty of devotees fast only on Day 1 and Day 9, or just on Ashtami and Navami. There is no single “correct” way. Ask ten families and you will get ten different sets of rules.

Garba Season Is Here
Let’s be honest. For a huge part of India, Navratri means one thing: Garba. Ahmedabad’s GMDC ground, Vadodara’s United Way, Mumbai’s Goregaon Sports Club. The big venues are already announcing their 2026 nights, and the good ones sell out fast.
Going for the first time? Wear something you can actually move in, reach before the aarti (that is when the real energy kicks in), and don’t stress about the steps. Nobody is judging. That is the whole point.
Kolkata Does It Bigger
While Gujarat dances, Bengal builds. Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata are essentially temporary art museums, and with the festival’s UNESCO heritage tag, the crowds keep growing every year. Saptami (Oct 17) to Navami (Oct 19) is peak pandal-hopping time.
Dashami (Oct 20) is the emotional one: sindoor khela in the morning, visarjan processions by evening.

One Festival, Five Different Indias
- West: Garba-Dandiya till late night, chaniya cholis everywhere.
- East: Pandal hopping, dhunuchi naach, bhog khichdi.
- South: Golu doll steps in Chennai homes, Ayudha Puja for vehicles and tools.
- North: Ramlila in every other colony park, ending with Ravan Dahan.
- Mysuru: the royal Dasara procession with elephants, gold, and a palace lit up like a dream.
