Volvo has pulled the wraps off its flagship electric SUV for India. The Volvo EX90, the Swedish carmaker’s biggest and most technologically advanced EV yet, has been launched at Rs 1.26 crore (ex-showroom), with bookings now open and customer deliveries scheduled to begin in January 2027.
The EX90 is the first of two big launches Volvo planned for this week. Alongside it, the all-electric ES90 luxury sedan was expected to make its India debut, but the company has so far kept quiet on its price and timelines, with Volvo’s India website still listing the sedan as “coming soon”.
A new flagship for Volvo India
The EX90 sits right at the top of Volvo’s Indian line-up, above the petrol-powered XC90. It is built on the carmaker’s SPA2 platform and arrives as a single, fully loaded Ultra variant. Under the skin is a 106kWh battery pack feeding two electric motors, one on each axle, for all-wheel drive.
The combined output stands at 456hp and 670Nm of torque, enough to take the big SUV from 0 to 100kph in a claimed 5.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 180kph, in line with Volvo’s safety-first philosophy.
Range and charging
Range anxiety should not be a big worry here. Volvo claims up to 625km on the WLTP cycle, while the Indian test cycle figure stretches that to 724km. Real-world reviews from international markets suggest the SUV delivers around 5.5km per kWh, which would translate to roughly 580km of usable range, still among the best in its class.
Charging is quick as well. The EX90 supports DC fast charging at up to 350kW, and Volvo claims a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in about 22 minutes under the right conditions. For home charging, buyers can expect a wall box to be offered through the dealer network.
Cabin: minimalist luxury with a Swedish touch

Step inside and the EX90 feels unmistakably Volvo, clean, calm and restrained. The cabin uses two-tone Nappa leather upholstery with brushed aluminium trim, and almost every function is routed through the 14.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen. A slim 9-inch digital display sits behind the three-spoke steering wheel.
India-spec cars get a six-seat layout as standard, with sliding and reclining captain’s chairs in the second row. The front seats get electric adjustment with ventilation, heating and massage functions. A panoramic sunroof with switchable transparency, a Bowers and Wilkins audio system and a full suite of driver assistance features round out the cabin highlights.

Who does the EX90 compete with?
At Rs 1.26 crore, the EX90 goes straight up against the heavyweights of the luxury EV space. Its most natural rivals are the BMW iX and the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, both of which have found a small but loyal audience in India. The EX90 undercuts both on price while matching them on claimed range, which could work in its favour.
The electric luxury segment in India is still tiny, but it is growing fast. With state governments pushing EV incentives and charging networks expanding along major highways, flagship electric SUVs are no longer just showroom showpieces. Volvo is clearly betting that well-heeled buyers are ready to skip petrol altogether.
ES90 sedan: still waiting
The other half of this week’s double launch remains a mystery. The ES90 would mark Volvo’s return to the luxury sedan segment in India after the S90 was discontinued in June last year. Internationally it rides on an 800V architecture with claimed range of up to 696km, but the company has not shared India-specific specifications or a price yet.
What buyers should know
Booking amounts have not been officially announced yet, so prospective buyers should check with their nearest Volvo dealer. Given the January 2027 delivery timeline, early booking could help secure a spot in the first batch. As with most luxury EVs imported to India, expect a waiting list once the initial allocation fills up.
The EX90 launch shows how serious Volvo is about going fully electric. The company has already announced global plans to phase out petrol cars, and India is clearly part of that roadmap. Whether the ES90 follows in the coming weeks will be the next thing to watch.
