Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo has finally pulled the covers off its two biggest electric bets for India. On October 12, the company launched the EX90 flagship electric SUV at an introductory price of Rs 1.26 crore (ex-showroom), and also debuted the ES90 electric sedan, marking Volvo’s return to the full-size sedan segment. Deliveries of the EX90 are scheduled to begin in January 2027, just in time for the luxury buying season to pick up steam.

The launch could not have come at a better time. India is deep into the festive season, a period when car buyers loosen their purse strings, and the luxury EV space is heating up with rivals like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Kia all pushing hard. Volvo, which already sells the EX30 and EC40 here, is now planting its flag firmly at the top end of the electric ladder.

Volvo EX90: price, battery and range

The EX90 arrives in India as a fully loaded, single-variant offering via the CBU (completely built unit) route. At its heart is a 106 kWh battery pack paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. The numbers are serious: 456 hp of combined power and 670 Nm of torque, good for a 0 to 100 kph sprint in 5.5 seconds.

Range, the big question for every EV buyer, is claimed at up to 625 km on the WLTP cycle. Real-world figures will be lower, of course, but even independent tests abroad have reported north of 500 km on a full charge, which should comfortably cover Delhi to Jaipur and back for most drivers without a charging stop.

Charging is where the EX90 shows off its 800-volt architecture. It supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, which can take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 22 minutes. For home charging, the 11 kW AC setup takes around 10 to 11 hours for a full top-up, making overnight charging the practical everyday routine.

ES90: Volvo’s electric sedan comeback

The ES90 is arguably the more interesting story. Volvo has not sold a proper flagship sedan in India since the S90 was discontinued, and the ES90 arrives as its zero-emission successor. It is a fastback-style sedan built on the same SPA2 platform, with a drag coefficient of just 0.25 that helps it claim up to 696 km of WLTP range, the highest of the pair.

Internationally, the ES90 is offered with 92 kWh and 106 kWh battery options and a choice of rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, with the top twin-motor version pushing out up to 680 hp. India-specific specifications and final pricing are expected to be in the Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.20 crore band, putting it squarely against the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE.

Design and cabin: Scandinavian minimalism, tech-heavy

Both cars wear Volvo’s latest design language: a closed-off front grille, pixel-style Thor’s Hammer headlights and clean, upright proportions. The EX90 stretches roughly 5.04 metres long and offers three rows of seating with a six-seat layout, while the ES90 is a five-seater focused on rear-seat comfort and long-distance cruising.

Inside, the headline act is a 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen running Google built-in software with 5G connectivity and over-the-air updates. There is also a 9-inch digital driver display, a head-up display, four-zone climate control and a 25-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system. Safety kit includes a LiDAR sensor, a full ADAS suite and a 360-degree camera, consistent with Volvo’s long-standing safety-first reputation.

Rivals and market impact

  • Volvo EX90: takes on the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, BMW iX and Kia EV9.
  • Volvo ES90: rivals the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE in the luxury electric sedan space.
  • Pricing strategy: Rs 1.26 crore introductory price for the EX90 undercuts some rivals while the CBU route keeps import duties in play.
  • Festive timing: launch coincides with Navratri and the run-up to Diwali, when luxury car enquiries typically peak.

Should you wait for deliveries?

With deliveries starting January 2027, early buyers will need some patience. The Rs 1.26 crore introductory price is the hook, and such prices rarely stay introductory for long. For luxury buyers who have been sitting on the fence about going electric, the EX90’s combination of a claimed 625 km range, ultra-fast charging and a six-seat layout makes it one of the more practical crore-plus EVs you can buy in India right now.
