Devara: Part 1 has come out on September 27, 2024, and is an action drama with Jr NTR and Saif Ali Khan. It’s directed by Koratala Siva and promises a new kind of story that will be rich in themes of morality, fear, and family legacy. For some, though, it promises too much, and does indeed reek of excess.
The movie is a 1990s-film revolving around Devara, who is played by Jr NTR and is a pirate with an entourage of his own but cannot get over the atrocities they commit. This bitter fight between him and Bhaira, portrayed by Saif Ali Khan, raises the plot. The detractors have criticized the unbelievably long running time of nearly three hours. Critics have cautioned that the three-hour long film is highly loaded with excellent visuals and action as it boasts of stardom through Jr NTR.
Overall the ambition of the film on paper seems to draw from familiar tropes and thus does not really surprise, and while the cinematography by Rathnavel is wonderful for visuals, the script does lack depth and doesn’t quite deliver on the emotional stakes set up within it.Janhvi Kapoor plays a more cameo-like role which has been criticized for being too underdeveloped
From a box office point of view, Devara: Part 1 is likely to open well, yet again, because it’s riding the popular cloud with its lead actors and big-ticket promotional campaigns preceding the movie. Baahubali’s trends have been emulated yet again by ending the movie on a cliffhanger, though it remains to be seen whether it can keep the audience engaged till the second part.
For the action lover interested in a spectacle that is aesthetically pleasant and full of incidents, Devara: Part 1 promises much, even if the viewer expecting a layered story will leave a bit unsatisfied.
