Jaguar Land Rover is about to take its biggest electric step in India yet. The company will launch three electric Range Rover models early next year, around April, and bring the Jaguar brand back to India in the second half of next year as an all-electric marque. The announcement came from JLR India Managing Director Rajan Amba at a new retail outlet launch in Mumbai on Monday, and it sets the stage for the British luxury brand’s first serious electric push in one of the world’s most aspiration-driven car markets.
The electric line-up is aimed squarely at a growing set of Indian buyers who want battery power without giving up brand identity. That is the gap Amba says JLR intends to fill: customers are moving to EVs, but in the luxury space they are unwilling to trade down on prestige to do it.
Three electric Range Rovers early next year
The first wave includes the Range Rover Electric and the Range Rover Sport Electric, both expected to reach Indian buyers around April next year. Bookings for the flagship Range Rover Electric opened in India earlier this year, and the model is already drawing attention with its numbers: a 118.5 kWh battery, a claimed WLTP range of up to 600 km, dual motors producing a combined 405 kW and 850 Nm of torque, and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds.
Built on an 800-volt architecture, the electric Range Rover supports DC fast charging of up to 350 kW, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes. For a brand whose customers routinely cover long intercity distances, those figures matter as much as the luxury badge does. The company has also committed to offering mild-hybrid, full-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions across its future Range Rover, Defender and Discovery ranges.

Jaguar returns in the second half, fully electric
The return of Jaguar is arguably the bigger story. The brand will relaunch in India next year with an exclusively electric portfolio, starting with a four-door GT built on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture. Early reports suggest the car could deliver over 1,000 bhp and a range of more than 700 km, putting it firmly in flagship electric GT territory.
For India, the re-entry comes after a period in which Jaguar’s showrooms had gone quiet on the product front. JLR has been clear globally that Jaguar’s relaunch will be electric-only, and India is now confirmed as part of that second-wave push.
The price problem: no trade-deal relief for EVs
One cloud hangs over the plan, and Amba did not sugarcoat it. The India-UK trade agreement, in force since July 15, cuts import duties on eligible British-built petrol and diesel cars from as high as 110 percent, but gives electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles no concession for the first five years.
“From a pricing perspective, we don’t expect the benefit to flow for another 5 years,” Amba said. That means the electric Range Rovers, which arrive as fully imported models, will carry the full weight of Indian import duties. Industry estimates put the starting price of the Range Rover Electric in the region of Rs 3.5 crore ex-showroom, which is rarefied territory even by luxury EV standards.
India’s luxury buyers keep spending
Amba’s pitch rests on a bet that Indian luxury demand can absorb the premium. JLR sold around 6,183 units in India last year and expects a higher number this year. The numbers tell an interesting story: despite retail sales falling about 2 percent in FY26, revenue grew roughly 14 percent, because the company is selling fewer entry-level cars and more high-margin flagships at an average transaction price of about Rs 1.4 crore.
Defender, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport now account for more than 80 percent of JLR India’s sales, a far higher flagship mix than most premium rivals manage. “People are wanting to fulfil their aspirations more and more as opposed to keeping money in the bank,” Amba said in Mumbai, noting that buyers are making decisions faster than ever. He recounted a customer who traded his way up from a Rs 50,000-a-month customs business before Covid to buying a premium or luxury car every year for seven years.

What to watch next
The company has started manufacturing vehicles at its Panapakkam plant near Chennai for the Indian market, though no decision on exports has been taken yet. Globally, JLR plans to spend £18 billion through FY29 on new technologies, platforms and business transformation, and India’s electric bet will be measured against that investment.
The real test arrives at the price boards. If the electric Range Rovers land in India without any duty concession, JLR will be asking Indian buyers to pay some of the highest luxury-EV prices in the world for the privilege of going electric in a Range Rover. Amba’s answer is that the brand, and the aspiration it carries, is worth it. Next April, the market gets to decide.
