The wait is finally over for thousands of geology and earth science aspirants. The Union Public Service Commission declared the final result of the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2026 on Friday, 16 October, and 66 candidates have been recommended for appointment against 69 vacancies. The four-page merit list is now available for direct download on upsc.gov.in, and no login is required to check it.
For candidates who have been preparing for this cycle since the notification came out in September 2025, this is the moment everything came down to. The final result brings the curtain down on a recruitment process that stretched across nearly 13 months: a preliminary examination in February, mains in June, and personality tests through September, all leading to Friday’s merit list.
Which posts the result covers
This cycle’s recruitment covered six post groups across geological and chemical sciences, mostly Group A posts in the Geological Survey of India and related departments. The break-up of vacancies and recommendations looks like this:
- Geologist, Group A: 21 vacancies, 20 recommended
- Scientist-B (Hydrogeology) / Assistant Hydrogeologist: 23 vacancies, 22 recommended
- Geophysicist / Scientist-B (Geophysics) / Assistant Geophysicist: 5 vacancies, 4 recommended
- Chemist, Group A: 16 vacancies, 16 recommended
- Scientist-B (Chemical), Group A: 2 vacancies, 2 recommended
- Assistant Chemist, Group B: 2 vacancies, 2 recommended
Three posts remain unfilled this cycle. According to UPSC, one Geologist vacancy reserved for a PwBD-3 category candidate and one Geophysicist post could not be filled because no suitable candidate was found. The unfilled Geologist vacancy will be carried forward to the next recruitment year.
A reserve list of four candidates
UPSC has also maintained a reserve list of four candidates under Rule 16 of the examination for two combined post groups: two for Scientist-B (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologist and two for Geophysicist/Scientist-B (Geophysics)/Assistant Geophysicist, split across General and OBC categories.
Reserve list candidates are considered for appointment only if a vacancy opens up, for instance when a recommended candidate withdraws. They should still keep their documents ready.
Six candidates recommended provisionally
Six roll numbers on the merit list carry provisional status, meaning their recommendation depends on successful verification of original documents. Their appointment offers will be withheld until the verification is complete, and the provisional status is valid for three months from 16 October.
- Geologist, Group A: 0690249
- Scientist-B (Hydrogeology) / Assistant Hydrogeologist: 0790515, 0790971, 0990228
- Geophysicist / Scientist-B (Geophysics) / Assistant Geophysicist: 0290194
- Chemist, Group A: 0691071
If you are one of these six, treat the next three months as a countdown. Submit originals of your educational certificates, identity proof, and category certificates well before the deadline, because provisional recommendations lapse if the documents are not verified in time.
