BYD’s luxury brand Denza is just days away from its India debut, and its first car for our market has finally been seen on Indian roads. The Denza D9 luxury electric MPV was spotted in Mumbai today, 8 November, grey and uncamouflaged, being unloaded from an enclosed transporter. It is the first time the D9 has been photographed in India, with Denza’s official launch event scheduled for 13 November in Mumbai.
Earlier this week, a green Denza Z9 GT, the brand’s high performance electric shooting brake, was also spotted in India without camouflage. Together, the two sightings confirm that Denza’s launch preparations are in full swing, and both cars expected at the debut event are already in the country.

What the spy shots show
The D9 seen in Mumbai wears a grey exterior and the same upright, chrome-heavy look the MPV is known for abroad, with a tall vertical-slat grille and slim LED headlamps. There is no camouflage on the car at all, suggesting a production-spec vehicle brought in for the launch event rather than a test mule. The spy shots, shared online and credited to Aryamane Dhanraj, show the MPV in full.
At over five metres long, the D9 is built to be chauffeur driven as much as self driven, and that is exactly the space it will target in India, where large luxury MPVs have found a steady audience among business families and hotels.
What we know about the D9 so far
India is expected to get the electric version of the D9. The MPV is sold abroad in both plug-in hybrid and pure electric forms, but reports point to the EV coming here first. The exact battery size, motor output, certified range and charging specifications for India are yet to be confirmed, and Denza should share them at the 13 November event.
Going by what has been reported so far, the D9 EV is expected to use a battery pack of around 103 kWh, with a single front-mounted motor producing about 313 hp and a claimed WLTP range of roughly 520 km. Inside, it is expected to come as a seven-seater with powered sliding doors and plush captain seats offering heating, ventilation and massage functions. That focus on rear-seat comfort is the D9’s main selling point against its rivals.
The Z9 GT will share the stage
The D9 will not arrive alone. Denza’s India debut on 13 November is expected to showcase two models: the D9 MPV and the Z9 GT shooting brake. The Z9 GT is the performance flagship of the range, with a 122.5 kWh battery, a triple-motor setup producing 1,156 hp, a claimed 0 to 100 kph time of 2.7 seconds and a WLTP range of around 600 km.
The Z9 GT is expected to be priced between Rs 1.2 crore and Rs 1.5 crore, ex-showroom, and is expected to arrive as a fully imported model. The D9 is also expected to come in via the import route, at least initially, which explains the expected price tag of around Rs 85 lakh, ex-showroom. Denza was originally set up in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, and it now operates as BYD’s premium brand.
Who will the D9 compete with?
The D9 will step into a small but growing luxury MPV space in India. Its most direct rival is the MG M9, the electric luxury MPV that has already found buyers among chauffeur-driven customers. It will also face the Toyota Vellfire and the Lexus LM, both established names in this segment, though they run on hybrid powertrains rather than pure electric.
An electric MPV at around Rs 85 lakh would undercut the Vellfire and the LM on price while offering similar rear-seat luxury. Much will depend on the final price and how quickly Denza can build its retail and service network, which is expected to cover Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
The Mumbai sighting is the clearest sign yet that Denza is serious about India. The cars are here and the launch is five days away. All eyes will be on 13 November, when Denza finally puts a price on the D9.
