If you are a Class 12 student with your eyes set on an engineering seat, this is the week to start keeping your documents in order. The National Testing Agency is expected to open the JEE Main 2027 Session 1 application window any day now, kicking off the admission season for the country’s biggest engineering entrance examination.
Going by the pattern of the last two years, the registration link should go live on the official portal, jeemain.nta.nic.in, sometime in the last week of October. For JEE Main 2026, Session 1 registration began on October 31, 2025, and for the 2025 cycle it opened on October 28, 2024. Aspirants would do well to have their scanned documents ready rather than waiting for the official notice to drop.
Session 1 exam dates are already out
Unlike the application dates, the examination schedule for JEE Main 2027 is already confirmed. As per the NTA’s official exam calendar, Session 1 will be held on January 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30, 2027, with January 31 kept as a buffer date.
Paper 1, for BE and BTech programmes, covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Paper 2A, for BArch, comprises Mathematics, an Aptitude Test and a Drawing Test, while Paper 2B is for BPlanning. Each paper runs for three hours, except the combined BArch and BPlanning papers, which get three and a half hours. In the last cycle, Shift 1 ran from 9 am to 12 noon and Shift 2 from 3 pm to 6 pm.
Who can apply
The eligibility bar stays generous. There is no age limit for JEE Main. Students who passed their Class 12 or equivalent examination in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing for it in 2027, can register, irrespective of their age. This is a change many aspirants forget: the Class 12 pass-outs from the last two years are eligible, not just current-year board candidates.
Drawing from the National Education Policy, the exam is expected to be conducted in 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Here is an important warning from the NTA: choose your question paper medium carefully while filling the form, because it cannot be changed later.
Documents to keep ready
- Scanned photograph and signature in the prescribed format
- A live photograph, which candidates must capture at the time of filling the form
- Valid identity details and academic records, including Class 10 and 12 marksheets
- Category and PwD certificates, if applicable
- A working mobile number and email ID for OTP verification and all future logins
During form filling, candidates will also have to set a password and pick a security question with its answer. The NTA advises applicants to note these down carefully, since the same credentials will be used for every future login, admit card download and result check.

Reforms on the horizon
This year’s registration comes with an interesting backdrop. Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, who heads the high-powered task force on NTA examination reforms, has suggested doing away with traditional question papers altogether and building massive question banks to curb paper leaks. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum 2026, he argued that leaks have repeatedly disrupted high-stakes exams taken by millions, and that technology built with the candidate in mind can scale a fix.
While that is a longer-term debate, the immediate advice for this year’s aspirants is simpler: do not rely on social media forwards for updates. The NCTE this week warned candidates against a fake notice circulating online about TET and graduation-mark eligibility for teacher recruitment, a reminder that unverified circulars can cost real preparation time. For JEE Main, the only source that counts is jeemain.nta.nic.in.
