Hyderabad-based consumer electronics brand Mivi has taken its biggest step yet beyond audio. The company has inaugurated a Rs 200 crore integrated research, development and manufacturing facility at E-City in Tukkuguda, near Hyderabad, and with it, has formally entered the smartphone business with its Mivi One 5G handset.

Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu inaugurated the plant on Saturday. The facility has been set up by Avishakaran Industries Pvt Ltd, Mivi’s parent company, and brings design, research and production under one roof, a shift the company says will cut its dependence on imports and speed up product development for Indian buyers.

A plant built for scale

The numbers behind the new unit explain why it matters. The facility can manufacture five lakh earbuds and 75,000 soundbars every month, and the company says it will employ around 2,500 people, counting both direct jobs and roles across the surrounding supply chain.

For a brand that started a decade ago selling audio products, that is a major jump in capacity. Mivi’s portfolio today spans earbuds, headphones, speakers and soundbars, and the new plant is meant to anchor production across all of them while the company pushes into new categories.

The inauguration also marks Mivi’s tenth year in business. Co-founders Midhula Devabhaktuni and Viswanadh Kandula were present at the ceremony, along with senior state officials including Anudeep Durishetty, Joint Secretary, ITE&C, and K. Shashanka, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC).

From earbuds to smartphones

The most talked-about part of the expansion is the move into phones. Mivi recently launched the Mivi One 5G smartphone, and the Tukkuguda facility will support its push into mobile hardware as it looks to compete with international brands in the domestic market.

It is a crowded, unforgiving segment, but the company is betting that local manufacturing, control over design and a price-sensitive Indian audience give it a fighting chance. By making products in India rather than importing finished goods, Mivi can react faster to demand and keep costs in check, two things that matter enormously in the budget and mid-range phone market.

The timing also fits a wider shift. Indian consumers are buying more homegrown electronics, and the government has been pushing hard for domestic value addition in everything from audio gear to phones and components.

Why Telangana is backing the bet

For Telangana, the Mivi plant is another piece in a larger electronics manufacturing push. Minister Sridhar Babu said the state wants to emerge as one of India’s leading electronics manufacturing destinations, pointing to its digital and physical infrastructure, skilled workforce, research institutions and ease of doing business.

He noted that Telangana’s manufacturing sector grew 7.7 percent in 2025-26, contributing Rs 1.37 lakh crore to the state’s Gross State Value Added. Under the Telangana Rising-2047 vision, the government plans to strengthen electronics manufacturing clusters and hardware parks, while expanding its presence in chip design, semiconductor manufacturing and electronic components.

“With homegrown success stories like Mivi, Telangana has the ecosystem to innovate and manufacture not just for India, but for global markets,” Sridhar Babu said at the inauguration.

NITI Aayog estimates cited by the minister put India’s electronics manufacturing sector on course to reach $500 billion by 2030, a figure the state government is using to pitch Telangana to investors. Mivi has already sought an additional 100 acres of land for further expansion, a sign that the company expects the Tukkuguda site to grow well beyond its current footprint.

What this means for buyers

  • More Made-in-India audio gear: five lakh earbuds and 75,000 soundbars a month from a single Indian plant should mean steadier supply and keener pricing.
  • A new Indian phone brand to watch: the Mivi One 5G marks the company’s entry into smartphones, with local manufacturing behind it.
  • Jobs and suppliers: around 2,500 jobs, plus work for component suppliers and logistics firms around Hyderabad.
  • Faster product cycles: R&D and manufacturing under one roof lets Mivi move from design to store shelves more quickly.
