Most of the AI world is obsessed with chatbots. Birla AI Labs is looking somewhere else entirely. On Monday, the Aditya Birla Group’s AI venture launched Yug-1, a made-in-India time series foundation model designed to do something far less glamorous but arguably more consequential: predict what happens next in the data that actually runs businesses.
The announcement, made by Founder and Chairperson Ananya Birla in a LinkedIn post, positions Yug-1 as the lab’s first major research release. The 271.8-million-parameter model is built to forecast outcomes, identify patterns and detect anomalies across interconnected datasets, from retail demand curves to equipment performance and financial signals.

Why time series, and why now
“Most of the conversation around AI today is about language. But so much of the data that actually runs businesses and economies moves through time: demand and supply, equipment performance, financial signals, infrastructure use,” Birla wrote. “Understanding how these patterns evolve is where some of the most consequential decisions get made.”
Time series foundation models are large-scale AI systems pre-trained on temporal patterns, from weather and traffic records to retail and energy data. While language models answer questions, TSFMs answer a different kind of question: what is likely to happen next week, next quarter, next year.
How Yug-1 stands out
According to its technical documentation, Yug-1 uses what it calls zero-shot probabilistic forecasting. In plain terms, the model can be tested on a new forecasting problem without being trained on it first, and it returns a range of possible outcomes so businesses can see the uncertainty baked into any prediction.
The company claims Yug-1 outperformed other first-generation time series foundation models on the GiftEval benchmark and held its own against newer-generation models. It has also described Yug-1 as Asia’s first TSMF built for real-world use, a claim aimed squarely at a field dominated so far by American and European labs.
- Parameter count: 271.8 million
- Core tasks: demand planning, equipment monitoring, finance, infrastructure
- Forecasting style: zero-shot and probabilistic, no separate model per problem
- Benchmark claim: beat other first-generation TSMFs on GiftEval
- Development cycle: the company says its frontier research team went from training to deployment in under six months
Open to researchers from day one
Rather than keeping Yug-1 behind an API, Birla AI Labs has released it on GitHub and Hugging Face for developers and researchers to test. The lab’s research team has been presenting its work at top venues including NeurIPS 2025, ICML 2026 and the World Summit AI, alongside university campuses in India, Europe and the UK.
“When we started the research arm of Birla AI Labs, the belief was simple: research only matters when it reaches the real world,” Birla wrote.
The launch also fits a broader shift in how India’s large conglomerates are approaching AI. Last week, Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said the group would invest in AI more gradually than expected a year ago, arguing that decisions should be driven by returns rather than the fear of missing out. Yug-1 suggests the group is placing its bets on practical, industrial AI rather than consumer-facing chatbots.
What it means for Indian businesses
For Indian companies wrestling with demand forecasting, inventory planning or equipment maintenance, a purpose-built model that handles messy, real-world time series data could fill a genuine gap. Most off-the-shelf forecasting tools either require heavy customization or struggle with the scale and variability of Indian operating conditions.
Whether Yug-1 delivers on its benchmark claims will now be tested in the open, with the code in researchers’ hands. That transparency is the point, and it marks one of the most serious made-in-India attempts at foundational AI research to date.
FAQs
What is Yug-1?
Yug-1 is a time series foundation model launched by Birla AI Labs on October 19, 2026. It forecasts outcomes and detects anomalies in data that changes over time, such as demand, equipment performance and financial signals.
Who built Yug-1?
It was built by Birla AI Labs, the AI research and venture arm of the Aditya Birla Group, founded and chaired by Ananya Birla.
Is Yug-1 open source?
Yes. The model has been released on GitHub and Hugging Face for developers and researchers to test.
What does “zero-shot forecasting” mean?
It means the model can attempt forecasting problems it has not been specifically trained on, instead of needing a separate trained model for each task.
How is Yug-1 different from ChatGPT-style AI?
ChatGPT-style models work with language. Yug-1 works with time series data, the numerical records of how things change over time, to support business decisions.
Birla AI Labs has released Yug-1 at a moment when Indian industry is hungry for practical AI. The code is public, the benchmarks are stated, and the real test, adoption by real businesses, starts now.
