Vijay Salgaonkar has done it again. Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam 3: The Conclusion has sprinted past Rs 407 crore at the worldwide box office in just eight days, and it shows no sign of running out of breath. In an industry where big weekends often collapse into quiet second weeks, this one is bending the rules.

The headline figure landed on Friday, the film’s eighth day in cinemas. That the eighth day delivered a jump rather than a slide is what has trade watchers talking. Most blockbusters spend their second Friday defending ground. Drishyam 3 went on the attack.

Day 8 behaved like a second opening

According to box office tracker Sacnilk, the film pulled in Rs 14.50 crore net in India on its second Friday. That is an 11.5 per cent jump over Thursday’s Rs 13 crore, which is unusual for a film this far into its run. The total India net now stands at Rs 260 crore, with the gross touching Rs 312 crore. Overseas markets have added another Rs 95 crore, including a tidy Rs 6 crore on Friday alone.

The scale of the release helps explain the stamina. The film played across 14,583 shows on its second Friday, a count most week-two releases can only dream of. Screen counts like that mean the audience never has to look far for a convenient show, and the box office keeps ticking.

Records are falling in bunches

The Rs 407 crore milestone matters most in context. Drishyam 2 earned roughly Rs 342 crore worldwide across its entire theatrical run, which means the third chapter has already out-earned its predecessor’s full lifetime haul in eight days. It has also gone past the worldwide total of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which collected around Rs 367.65 crore.

Even the acclaimed Malayalam original starring Mohanlal, which the Hindi franchise is adapted from, sits far behind at about Rs 239.83 crore worldwide. The Hindi version has now decisively become the biggest commercial success the Drishyam story has ever had.

The next target is the one trade analysts are watching closely: Tanhaji’s domestic net record of Rs 279.59 crore. With the India net already at Rs 260 crore and the second weekend now underway, that mark looks within reach. If it falls, Drishyam 3 becomes Ajay Devgn’s highest-grossing film in India, a remarkable late-career peak.

Why this film refused to slow down

Part of the answer goes back to the start. The film opened on October 2 with a massive Rs 62 crore, the third-biggest opening day in Bollywood history. It then collected Rs 176.50 crore in its first three days, helped by the extended holiday weekend and the built-in goodwill of the franchise.

The usual post-weekend dip arrived on schedule: Monday collections fell to Rs 21 crore, and the midweek days settled between Rs 13 crore and Rs 15 crore. But the Friday recovery changed the narrative. A film that can climb back up in week two usually has genuine word of mouth behind it, not just a marketing push.

The other advantage is timing. There has been no major competing Hindi release to eat into screens, so Drishyam 3 has held on to a huge number of cinema halls deep into its second week. In the box office business, an empty lane is worth crores.

The numbers that tell the story

  • Rs 407 crore: worldwide collection in 8 days

  • Rs 62 crore: opening day, the third-biggest in Bollywood history
  • 14,583: shows running on the second Friday
