Mohammed Shami, the star Indian fast bowler, will be honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award for his outstanding performance in sports and games in 2023. The award, which is given by the Sports Ministry of India, recognises athletes who have shown exceptional skills, sportsmanship and dedication to their respective sports.
Shami was a key member of the Indian cricket team that won the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in Australia. He was the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 24 wickets in seven matches, including a brilliant spell of 5 for 18 against New Zealand in the semi-final. He also played a vital role in India’s historic victory over Australia in the final, taking two crucial wickets.
Shami’s achievements have earned him praise from fans, experts and former cricketers alike. He has also been nominated for several other awards, such as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, which is India’s highest sporting honour. Shami is one of only two cricketers to receive an Arjuna Award this year, along with Anush Agarwalla from equestrian.
Shami has overcome many challenges and setbacks in his career, such as injuries, personal issues and controversies. He has always bounced back with determination and passion to prove himself on the big stage. He has also been a mentor and role model for many young cricketers who aspire to follow his footsteps.
Shami will receive his Arjuna Award on January 9th, 2024 at a grand ceremony in New Delhi. He will join other eminent sportspersons who have received this honour in the past, such as Milkha Singh, P.T. Usha, Abhinav Bindra and Mary Kom.
The Arjuna Award is named after Arjuna, one of the greatest warriors and archers of ancient India. It is awarded annually by the President of India to athletes who have excelled in various sports disciplines. The award was first instituted in 1961 by Dr. K.M. Munshi.
