Mumbai City FC secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Mohun Bagan Super Giant in a thrilling Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Mumbai Football Arena on Tuesday. The win lifted the Islanders to the third spot in the ISL 2023-24 standings, with 19 points from nine matches.

The match started with a high tempo, as both teams created chances to score. However, it was Mohun Bagan who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, when Jason Cummings converted a cross from Asish Rai to give the visitors the lead. Mumbai City FC responded well, and equalized in the 43rd minute, when TH Bipin Singh headed in a cross from Akash Mishra. The first half ended with the score 1-1.

The second half saw more drama, as Mohun Bagan were reduced to 10 men in the 53rd minute, when Asish Rai received a straight red card for a foul on Jorge Diaz. Mumbai City FC took advantage of the numerical superiority, and scored the winning goal in the 67th minute, when Greg Stewart volleyed in a rebound from a Vikram Pratap Singh shot. Mohun Bagan tried to salvage a point, but Mumbai City FC defended well and held on to the narrow lead.

The match ended with the score 2-1 in favour of Mumbai City FC, who celebrated their first win over Mohun Bagan in the ISL. The Islanders also avenged their 0-3 loss to the Kolkata-based club in the 2022-23 ISL final. Mohun Bagan remained third in the table, with 19 points from eight matches.
