Bengaluru airport, also known as Kempegowda International Airport, has been praised by UNESCO for its Terminal 2 (T2), which was inaugurated in November 2022. T2 has been awarded the prestigious Prix Versailles Award for being one of the world’s most beautiful airports and for its innovative design, environmental stewardship, and reflection of local heritage.
The Prix Versailles Award is an internationally acclaimed design and architecture award that focuses on “intelligent sustainability” as a cultural driver. It recognizes excellence in architecture, interior design, landscape design, urban planning, and social interaction.
T2 is the only Indian airport to receive this esteemed recognition, highlighting its commitment to exceptional design and architecture on a global scale. T2 covers an area of 255,661 square meters and can accommodate 25 million passengers per annum. It features a spacious indoor garden with rammed-earth walls and waterfalls, as well as hanging planted bells. It also showcases art and decor elements that are part of its recently launched art programme.
T2 is also built with sustainable materials and technologies that reduce its environmental impact. It is pre-certified with a Platinum LEED rating by the US Green Building Council before operational commencement. It also uses engineered bamboo as its main structural material, which is biodegradable and renewable.
Hari Marar, MD & CEO of Bangalore International Airport Ltd, said that he was delighted by the recognition and that it was a moment of immense pride for the airport. He said that T2 aims to offer an unforgettable journey to all passengers with its blend of technology and artistry.
The award ceremony for the Prix Versailles Award will be held in Paris in February 2024. The winners will be announced at a gala event attended by eminent personalities from the fields of culture, arts, architecture, and society.
