Fire safety equipment maker HD Fire Protect made a roaring Dalal Street debut on Wednesday, with its shares listing at a premium of nearly 24 per cent over the issue price before giving up some of the early gains.
The stock opened at Rs 335 on the NSE, a 23.62 per cent premium over the Rs 271 issue price, and at Rs 334.40 on the BSE, up 23.39 per cent. The strong opening was very much in line with what the grey market had predicted, where the shares were commanding a premium of Rs 70 to Rs 72 ahead of the listing.
The celebrations cooled as the session progressed. By mid-afternoon, the stock was trading at Rs 306.75 on the NSE, about 8.43 per cent below its opening price, and at Rs 304.70 on the BSE. Even after the pullback, early investors were sitting on solid listing gains, with the company’s market capitalisation standing at roughly Rs 5,284 crore on the NSE and Rs 5,276 crore on the BSE.
The numbers behind the debut
The Rs 712-crore IPO had closed its three-day bidding window on October 15 with demand that caught the Street’s attention. The issue was subscribed 131.70 times overall, a level of oversubscription that rarely goes unnoticed.
- Qualified institutional buyers bid 256.65 times their quota, the strongest of the three categories.
- Non-institutional investors subscribed 203.21 times.
- Retail investors bid roughly 30.5 times the shares reserved for them.
- The price band was Rs 258 to Rs 271 per share, with a lot size of 55 shares.
- At the top of the band, a retail investor needed a minimum of Rs 14,905 for one lot.
For those who received an allotment, the listing day arithmetic was straightforward. At a premium of Rs 64 per share, each allotted lot of 55 shares translated into a paper profit of about Rs 3,520 at the opening price.
A pure offer-for-sale issue
Investors should note one important detail about this issue: it was entirely an offer for sale of 2.63 crore equity shares by the promoters. That means the company itself will receive none of the Rs 712 crore raised; the entire amount goes to the selling shareholders.
Two promoter shareholders sold their stakes. Harish Narshi Dharamshi offloaded 89,83,700 shares worth Rs 243.46 crore, while Kusum Harish Dharamshi sold 1,73,00,800 shares valued at Rs 468.85 crore. Ambit, Anand Rathi Advisors and IIFL Capital Services acted as the book-running lead managers, with MUFG Intime India as the registrar.
What the company actually does
Incorporated in April 1997, the Mumbai-based HD Fire Protect manufactures and supplies fire protection equipment and systems, with water, foam and gas-based fire suppression solutions across eight product categories. The portfolio spans sprinklers, alarm valves and accessories, deluge valves and systems, foam equipment and suppression systems, monitors and nozzles, water spray nozzles, custom-engineered systems and gas suppression systems.
The company has built its reputation on marquee installations. Its equipment has been supplied for the new Parliament building, the country’s largest refinery in Jamnagar and the space launch facility in Sriharikota. It serves sectors such as oil and gas, refining, petrochemicals, power, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, data centres and warehousing, and operates two manufacturing facilities in Maharashtra.

What experts are watching now
Market watchers say the listing premium was earned, but the stock’s next chapter will be written by execution. Dr Ravi Singh, Chief Research Officer at Master Capital Services, noted that the company’s performance going forward will depend on its ability to expand its customer base, maintain healthy margins and strengthen operating cash flows.
That is a fair checklist. Fire protection equipment is a niche, project-linked business where order wins from infrastructure, industrial and data centre clients drive revenue. Investors will now track order inflows and margin trends closely, quarter by quarter.
