The Land Rover Defender 110 has just become a lot easier to justify. Jaguar Land Rover India confirmed on Tuesday, October 27, that it has started assembling the Defender 110 at its plant in Pune, and the change has cut prices by up to Rs 34 lakh. The big luxury SUV now starts at Rs 99 lakh, ex-showroom in New Delhi, and customer deliveries of the locally assembled cars are scheduled to begin on November 15.

For a vehicle that has sold more than 9,000 units in India in the last three and a half years, this is a first. India is now the first market outside Europe where the Defender 110 is produced, with global production continuing at JLR’s plant in Nitra, Slovakia. The Pune cars will be sold only in India.

Why the price has fallen so sharply

The saving comes from how the car reaches India. Until now, the Defender 110 arrived as a fully built import, which attracts high duties. The Pune operation uses the completely knocked down, or CKD, route, where the car is assembled locally from imported kits. Lower duties mean a lower ex-showroom price, and JLR has passed much of that benefit to buyers.

There is one detail worth understanding before comparing old and new prices. The headline cut of Rs 34 lakh compares the new price with the old fully loaded price, which included optional equipment. On the locally assembled car, much of that equipment is now standard, so buyers are getting more kit for the lower price. JLR expects the move to lift Defender sales volumes by up to 20 per cent.

New Defender 110 prices in India

All three locally assembled versions come in a single X-Dynamic HSE trim, with a choice of three engines. Prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi:

  • 2.0-litre petrol (P300): Rs 99 lakh, down from Rs 1.13 crore, a cut of Rs 14 lakh. It makes 296 bhp.
  • 3.0-litre petrol (P400): Rs 1.18 crore, down from Rs 1.52 crore, a cut of Rs 34 lakh. It makes 394 bhp.
  • 3.0-litre diesel (D350): Rs 1.18 crore, down from Rs 1.52 crore, a cut of Rs 34 lakh. It makes 346 bhp.

Each engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Defender 90, Defender 130 and the high-performance Defender OCTA will continue to be imported as fully built units, so this price change applies only to the Defender 110 for now.

More equipment, now standard

The price cut is only half the story. JLR has folded previously optional equipment into the standard specification, so the Pune-built cars arrive better equipped than the imports they replace. The 2.0-litre version gains 17 additional features, equipment previously worth about Rs 6.5 lakh, while the 3.0-litre petrol and diesel versions gain 29 features, previously worth about Rs 17 lakh.

The Defender 110 keeps its go-anywhere hardware, with up to 900 mm of wading depth.

That added kit includes electronic air suspension with Adaptive Dynamics, Terrain Response 2, Wade Sensing, a Meridian surround-sound system and a head-up display on the six-cylinder versions, along with features such as three-zone climate control, cabin air purification, a ClearSight interior rear-view mirror and 14-way electrically adjustable front seats with heating, cooling and memory functions on the range. The core off-road hardware is unchanged, including up to 75 mm of extra ride height from the air suspension and a 900 mm wading depth.

What this means for buyers

For buyers who were already considering the Defender 110, the timing is straightforward. Bookings are open through JLR dealers and online, and the first locally assembled cars reach customers from November 15. Compare the final on-road price with the dealer, since registration, insurance and other charges sit on top of the ex-showroom figure.

For JLR, the move is about more than one model. Rajan Amba, Managing Director of JLR India, said the country has embraced the Defender for its capability and character, and that building it in Pune reflects the company’s ambition for India. With the Defender already JLR India’s best-selling model, a lower price and shorter waiting lists could bring a new set of buyers into showrooms in the weeks ahead.
