Microsoft has opened a voluntary exit offer to about 60,000 employees across four countries, including India. The offer was announced on Monday, October 26, and it is voluntary. Nobody covered by it is being forced out, but those who accept will leave at the end of December.
India is one of only four countries included, alongside the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and Microsoft has about 23,000 employees in India. The company has not said how many of them are eligible and has not published a list.
Reports say eligible employees in India have until December 1 to decide, and those who accept will leave on December 31. Anyone who does not take the offer simply stays on.
What Microsoft announced
Microsoft Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the Voluntary Exit Offer in a blog post on October 26. She described it as a time limited initiative that gives employees greater flexibility, with financial support and career planning resources for those who choose to leave.
About 60,000 employees are eligible, according to reports confirmed by the company. That is roughly 27 percent of Microsoft’s global workforce of 223,000 people at the end of June 2026, down from 228,000 at the end of 2025, according to regulatory filings cited by The Hindu.
Who is eligible, and who is not
The offer covers employees at level 70 and below in participating teams, meaning staff at vice president level and below in the teams taking part. Corporate vice presidents and above are outside the pool.
Not every team is taking part. Coleman wrote that some organisations are providing the offer and some are not. Reports say some groups working on data centres, sales and marketing are among those excluded.
The offer is not based on age, length of service or performance, according to an internal human resources note seen by The Verge. It follows a voluntary retirement programme offered earlier this year to a smaller group of long serving employees in the United States, but this time there is no age or tenure requirement.
What employees in India need to know
Employees should rely on the email sent to them, not social media summaries, because eligibility and terms can vary by team, level and location. The package is understood to be broadly similar to a standard severance arrangement, including one month’s base salary for every completed year of service, along with health insurance and career transition services. Exact terms will be in each individual offer.
Microsoft has also stressed its continuing investment in India. A spokesperson said the company is backing India’s artificial intelligence ambitions with 20.5 billion dollars in committed investment between 2025 and 2029, and is on track to equip 20 million people in India with artificial intelligence skills by 2030.

Why Microsoft is doing this now
The immediate context is cost pressure alongside very heavy spending on artificial intelligence. Microsoft is pouring money into data centres and computing capacity for artificial intelligence, and The Hindu reported that the buyout offer comes as the company seeks to cut costs while funding that spending.
This is the second voluntary offer from Microsoft this year. In April, the company reportedly offered around 7 percent of its United States workforce the option to retire early, and around 30 percent of those eligible took it, according to CNBC reporting cited by The Hindu. The new offer is far wider, covering four countries and roughly a quarter of the global workforce.
A voluntary exit offer is not the same as a layoff round. In a layoff, the company selects roles to remove. Here, the company has set the pool and the terms, and the employee decides. Employees in the pool should read the individual offer carefully, including the payment, the treatment of stock and the health cover period, and keep a copy of every document.
