Tirunelveli faces heavy rain and flood situation; government steps up relief measures

Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu has been experiencing heavy rain and flood situation for the past few days, as the Meteorological department issued a red alert warning for the region. The incessant rainfall has caused waterlogging in several areas, affecting the normal life and livelihood of the people.



According to the district administration, a total of 108 families with 361 members were shifted to 11 relief camps in seven taluks of the district as a precautionary measure. The government has also deployed teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to carry out rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.


District Collector K. P. Karthikeyan said that the government has been closely monitoring the situation and taking all necessary steps to mitigate the impact of the heavy rain and flood². He said that the government has also submitted a comprehensive report on the drought-like situation prevailing in the district due to the successive monsoon failures since January 2022. He assured that the government would provide adequate compensation and assistance to the farmers who have suffered crop loss due to the extreme weather conditions.

The Collector also appealed to the public to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, as the weather forecast predicted more rain in the coming days. He said that the public can contact the district control room at 0462-2501033 for any emergency assistance or information. He also urged the public to follow the Covid-19 safety protocols and maintain social distancing in the relief camps.
