The Bajaj Chetak has quietly crossed one of the biggest milestones in Indian electric mobility. As of today, 6 November 2026, cumulative retail sales of the electric scooter have gone past 10 lakh units, according to Vahan registration data. That makes Bajaj Auto only the third electric two-wheeler maker in the country to reach the million-unit mark, after Ola Electric and TVS Motor Company.
It is a milestone nearly seven years in the making. The modern Chetak, an electric reboot of the beloved petrol scooter, was launched in January 2020. The early years were slow, with a young market and a small EV-only sales network holding it back. But the last three years have told a very different story, and 2026 has been the best of them all.
A slow start, then a surge
The turnaround began in 2024. That year the Chetak delivered 2,01,167 units, up 168 percent on the 75,112 units sold in 2023, and Bajaj moved up to the number three spot among electric two-wheeler makers. In 2025 the scooter went one better, selling 2,79,691 units, a rise of 39 percent, and finishing as the number two brand in the segment, behind TVS and ahead of Ather Energy.
The market share numbers tell the same story. The Chetak held just 4 percent of all electric two-wheeler sales in India in 2022. That climbed to 17 percent in 2024, then 21 percent in 2025. In 2026 so far, it stands at 22 percent, the highest it has ever been, and second only to TVS at 26 percent.
2026 has been the best year yet
This year the Chetak has broken its own records almost every quarter. Between 1 January and 6 November, Bajaj has sold 4,12,409 Chetaks, up 73 percent on the same period last year. In the process it has crossed the 3 lakh and 4 lakh annual milestones for the first time.
The quarterly run shows the momentum building through the year. The first quarter brought 1,00,615 units, the second 1,17,679, and the third 1,36,040, a jump of 156 percent on the same quarter last year. October alone delivered 49,170 units, the best month in the scooter’s history, as festive buying picked up ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali.

For context, the wider electric two-wheeler market has sold 18.3 lakh units so far in 2026 and is heading for a record year of more than 2 million units. TVS leads the pack with 4,81,704 units this year, followed by Bajaj, then Ather Energy at 2,99,778, Hero Vida at 2,07,583 and Ola Electric at 1,21,061. Together the top six brands account for 88 percent of all electric two-wheelers sold in India this year.
The road to five lakh
The next milestone is already in sight. With 55 days left in 2026, Bajaj needs 87,591 more Chetak sales to close the calendar year at 5 lakh units. Given the festive season, that is well within reach. Dhanteras falls today and Diwali follows on 8 November, traditionally the strongest buying days of the year for two-wheelers, and dealers expect November to be a bumper month.
If the pace holds, Bajaj could even record more than 50,000 Chetak sales in a single month for the first time. October’s record of 49,170 units already came close, and the festive rush this week could push it over the line.
What the milestone means
Crossing 10 lakh sales matters because it puts the Chetak in rare company. Only Ola Electric and TVS have sold a million electric two-wheelers in India before it. It also shows how far the segment has come from its early days, when buyers were unsure about range, charging and resale value.
The Chetak’s appeal has always been its mix of the familiar and the new. It keeps the retro styling and metal body of the original scooter, a name Indian buyers have trusted for decades, while running on a modern electric powertrain. The range, priced from around Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom), sits in the heart of the family scooter market, where most Indian buyers actually shop.
The company has spent the last two years widening the Chetak range and its dealer network. With the festive season at its peak and a five-lakh year in reach, the Chetak’s comeback story still has a few chapters left in 2026.
