India opened their medal account at the ISSF World Championship 2026 in Doha on Tuesday with a haul that told two very different stories. There was gold, there was silver, and there was the sting of an Olympic quota slipping away. By the end of the day, the Indian contingent had one gold and two silver medals to show for its efforts, good enough for second place in the early medal standings, but none came in an event that hands out a ticket to Los Angeles 2028.
The pistol shooters struck first and the rifle shooters followed, but in the 10m air rifle events, where LA 2028 quota places were actually on offer, India came away empty-handed.
Ravinder leads the pistol trio to team gold
The gold arrived in the men’s 50m pistol team event, where Ravinder Singh, Saurabh Chaudhary and Amanpreet Singh combined for an aggregate of 1659-24x. Ravinder was the pick of the trio, shooting 559-11x, while Saurabh, a multiple-time World Cup gold medallist, contributed 551-7x and Amanpreet added 549-6x.
China took team silver with 1648, and South Korea claimed bronze.
Ravinder was not done. Hours later, he returned to the range for the individual 50m pistol competition and added a silver medal to his collection, again shooting 559-11x. He finished two points behind gold medallist Anton Aristarkhov, a neutral athlete, who shot 561-9x. Romania’s Luca Joldea took bronze with 558-5x.
There is one important footnote to the pistol success. The men’s 50m pistol is not part of the Olympic programme, so neither the team gold nor Ravinder’s individual silver carried a quota place for Los Angeles 2028. The medals still matter, they still count in the standings, but they do not move India closer to the LA Games.
Women’s rifle trio shoot silver behind China
The third medal of the day came from the women’s 10m air rifle team event, where Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Shambhavi Kshirsagar combined for 1894.4 points to take silver. China won gold with 1899.8 points, while Japan took bronze with 1892.6.
Elavenil, a two-time Olympian, has been the backbone of India’s women’s rifle team for years, and her experience showed in a team event where consistency across all three shooters matters more than one brilliant individual score. Sonam and Shambhavi held their nerve alongside her, and the trio finished a clear five points ahead of the bronze medallists.

The quota that got away
The disappointment of the day came in the individual 10m air rifle finals, the events that actually offered LA 2028 quota places. Elavenil was the only Indian shooter to reach an individual final across the men’s and women’s 10m air rifle events, and she finished sixth with 167.3 points, outside the quota positions.
South Korea’s reigning Olympic champion Ban Hyojin won the women’s final with 253.1 points, followed by China’s Han Jiayu with 252.2 and Wang Zifei with 231.0. On the men’s side, no Indian shooter reached the final at all, with the team also missing out on the team final.
It was a frustrating outcome because the 10m air rifle is where India has traditionally been strongest, and Doha is the first qualification event for Los Angeles 2028. Every missed final is a missed chance to book an early ticket.
What this means for the road to LA 2028
The good news is that the championships run until November 14, and plenty of quota events are still to come. India have already banked three medals and a second-place standing in the early table, and the shooting contingent still has its strongest events ahead of it.
- Medals so far: 1 gold, 2 silver, 0 bronze
- Gold: Men’s 50m pistol team (Ravinder Singh, Saurabh Chaudhary, Amanpreet Singh, 1659-24x)
- Silver: Men’s 50m pistol individual (Ravinder Singh, 559-11x)
- Silver: Women’s 10m air rifle team (Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar, Shambhavi Kshirsagar, 1894.4)
- Missed quotas: Men’s and women’s 10m air rifle, no Indian quota secured yet
- Championship dates: Doha, until November 14, with 36 LA 2028 quota places on offer
The challenge now is to convert strong shooting into quota places. Medals in non-Olympic events are welcome, but qualification is the real currency of this championship, and India will need its shooters to peak in the Olympic events still to come.
