Mahindra & Mahindra has launched the XUV 3XO ZNG in India, its first factory-fitted CNG SUV, with prices starting at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Announced on October 15, 2026, the new variant takes on the Tata Nexon iCNG and Maruti Suzuki Brezza S-CNG, and gives the XUV 3XO an unusual distinction: it is now available with four powertrain choices, petrol, diesel, electric and CNG. Bookings and deliveries are scheduled to begin on October 20.

Price and variants

Mahindra is offering the XUV 3XO ZNG in four trims, priced from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 12.27 lakh (ex-showroom):

  • MX Edge: Rs 9.99 lakh
  • RevX Edge (O): Rs 10.79 lakh
  • AX5: Rs 11.19 lakh
  • RevX A: Rs 12.27 lakh

The positioning is unapologetically premium. The ZNG starts roughly Rs 1.69 lakh above the Tata Nexon iCNG and about Rs 1.09 lakh above the Maruti Brezza S-CNG, based on indicative rival prices. Mahindra is clearly betting that buyers will pay more for a turbocharged engine and a longer features list, rather than choosing CNG purely on the lowest sticker price.

No power drop in CNG mode

Under the bonnet sits the familiar 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, tuned to produce 111hp and 200 Nm of torque. The talking point is that those figures hold identical in CNG mode. Most factory-fitted CNG cars lose a chunk of power when they switch fuels; Mahindra’s first-in-segment 10-bar CNG injection system is meant to keep throttle response and pulling power consistent.

The CNG system is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, and it switches to petrol automatically when the CNG runs low, so drivers are never left hunting for a pump mid-journey. Certified fuel efficiency stands at 24.7 km/kg, a strong number for a compact SUV carrying CNG hardware.

Twin cylinders keep the boot usable

One of the oldest complaints about CNG cars is that a single large cylinder eats the boot. Mahindra has gone the Tata route with twin smaller cylinders mounted under the boot floor, which preserves a flat loading area. Boot space is rated at 270 litres, compared with 321 litres in the Nexon iCNG, so it is not class-leading, but the luggage compartment stays genuinely usable rather than becoming a token shelf above a gas tank.

Features and safety

The ZNG carries over the 3XO’s cabin, so depending on the variant you get twin 10.25-inch screens, a panoramic sunroof, Dolby Atmos audio, a 360-degree camera, leatherette seats, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Six airbags are standard across the range, along with disc brakes on all four wheels. The 3XO family also carries a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, which Mahindra is leaning on in its marketing.

Mahindra’s bigger CNG bet

This launch is about more than one model. R Velusamy, President of the Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra, has said buyers today want the space, technology, safety and driving experience of an SUV along with the running costs of CNG, and the company is building exactly that.

There is also a regulatory angle. With stricter CAFE III norms kicking in from April 2027, Mahindra’s diesel-heavy line-up needs cleaner options to balance its fleet emissions, and CNG variants sit alongside EVs as the practical tools to do it. Mahindra is no stranger to CNG on its commercial pickups, but the 3XO is the first factory-fitted CNG vehicle in its current passenger line-up, joining Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Kia and Toyota in offering the fuel. Only the Nexon and Brezza currently offer factory CNG among compact SUVs, so the segment is still wide open.
