Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar is likely to be discharged from Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital today, Saturday, November 7, five days after a chest infection first put him in hospital in Pune. His daughter and Baramati MP Supriya Sule told news agency PTI on Friday that the 85-year-old leader is recovering well and could walk out of the hospital at around 11 a.m.

The update ends a week of worry for Pawar’s supporters and for leaders across party lines, several of whom have called the family over the past few days to ask after his health. Doctors at both hospitals that treated him have described his condition as stable throughout.

A week of hospital visits

Pawar was first admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune on November 2 after he complained of a cough and pleuritic chest pain, a sharp pain linked to the lining around the lungs. His daughter said at the time that he was undergoing medical tests and that all his health parameters were stable.

Dr Purvez K Grant, chief cardiologist and chairman and managing trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic, said Pawar had been admitted for a general check-up and medical observation. The hospital kept him under observation as a precaution, and doctors cleared him for discharge on November 4 after his condition stayed stable and the discomfort subsided.

Hours later the same day, Pawar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai for further treatment. Dr Pratit Samdani, a doctor at the hospital, said on Thursday that Pawar was stable and being treated for a respiratory and chest infection. “He had a cough and an infection, something like bronchitis trouble. His treatment is ongoing, and he is currently stable,” Dr Samdani said.

Calls from across party lines

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Pawar on Wednesday morning to enquire about his health and advised him to take complete rest. According to Sule, the Prime Minister told Pawar, “Supriya is ready now. Supriya and we will take care of the country. You rest; this is my request.” Pawar thanked him and asked the Prime Minister to keep working.

Several other leaders also reached out. Sule said Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had all called her to ask about her father’s health.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited Pawar at Breach Candy Hospital on Friday and enquired about his health. A day earlier, NCP leader Praful Patel had also visited him and said the veteran politician was stable and expected to return home in a day or two after completing his medical check-ups.

  • Breach Candy Hospital: He was admitted on November 4 for a respiratory and chest infection, described by doctors as something like bronchitis. He is stable and under treatment.

What happens next

If the discharge goes ahead as expected, Pawar will return home after treatment at two hospitals in Pune and Mumbai. Doctors have advised rest, and his public schedule is expected to stay on hold while he recovers fully.

At 85, Pawar remains one of Maharashtra’s most watched political figures, and his health has drawn attention well beyond his party. For now, the message from his family and his doctors is the same: he is stable, he is recovering, and he should be home soon.
