India is expected to see a surge of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2024, as more carmakers launch new models and variants in this segment. EVs offer lower running costs, lower maintenance, and a quieter ride than conventional cars. They also benefit from the growing charging infrastructure and government incentives in India.
Some of the most anticipated EVs that will launch in India in 2024 are:
1. Maruti Suzuki eVX: This will be the first all-electric offering from Maruti Suzuki, based on its popular Ciaz sedan. It will feature a 60 kWh battery pack and dual motors that will deliver a range of around 550 km. It is likely to be priced around Rs 22 lakh.
2. Hyundai Kona Electric: The second-generation Kona Electric will be larger, more upmarket, and more feature-rich than the current model. It will come with Hyundai’s new design language and a 48.4 kWh battery pack that will offer a range of 377 km according to the WLTP cycle. It is expected to be priced around Rs 25 lakh.
3. Tata Punch EV: Tata’s micro SUV, the Punch, will get an electric variant that will borrow design inspiration from the larger Nexon EV. It will come with standard and long range variants and could offer multiple battery and motor options. It is expected to be priced around Rs 12 lakh.
4. Tata Curvv EV: Tata’s first SUV coupe, the Curvv, will slot between the electric variants of the Harrier and the Nexon. It has already been spotted testing on multiple occasions on Indian roads. It will go on sale as an EV first, before the ICE version is released. It is expected to be priced around Rs 20 lakh.
5. Tata Harrier EV: Tata launched a facelifted version of its Harrier SUV in India earlier this year. It plans to launch an electric variant of it sometime in 2024 and showcased a concept version of it at the Auto Expo 2023. The Harrier EV will have a familiar design like the regular Harrier, but with EV-specific elements such as LED lights and solar panels. It could offer multiple battery and motor options, including all-wheel-drive (AWD), with a range of around 500 km.
Apart from these models, there are also some other upcoming EVs that are likely to launch in India in 2024, such as:
1. Audi Q6 e-tron: This will be an all-new electric SUV based on Audi’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE), which features advanced battery and charging technology as well as new electronics architecture. It will use an 800V architecture with a range of around 600 km. It is likely to be priced around Rs 1 crore.
2. BMW i5: This will be an electric version of BMW’s new generation of the 5 Series sedan. It will feature two iterations – M60 xDrive and eDrive40 – both featuring an 81.2 kWh battery pack that can produce up to 601 hp or up to 340 hp respectively. The WLTP range is up to 516 km for the twin-motor version or up to 582 km for the single-motor version.
3. BYD Seal: This will be BYD’s third offering in India after its e1 sedan and its e6 SUV. It will be a sporty four-door electric sedan with a low-slung aerodynamic design that gives it an ultra-slippery drag coefficient of just 0.219. It uses BYD’s new-gen e-Platform 3.0.
