The National Testing Agency (NTA) has opened applications for its Observer panel, inviting retired government officials, teachers, professors and armed forces personnel to help monitor some of India’s biggest entrance examinations. The application window opened on November 7 and will close on December 6, 2026.
Observers selected through this process will be deployed at examination centres across the country, and overseas where required, for tests such as NEET UG, JEE Main, CUET, UGC NET and CSIR NET. The empanelment will be valid for two years, subject to satisfactory conduct, though being on the panel does not guarantee deployment in every examination cycle.
The move comes as the NTA continues to tighten the conduct of its examinations, with observers acting as the agency’s eyes and ears inside the centre on exam day.
What does an NTA Observer do?
An Observer is the NTA’s representative at an examination centre. The job is to watch the conduct of the examination closely and report anything that goes wrong, directly to the agency.
Selected observers must attend a mandatory briefing meeting one day before the examination and report to their assigned centre ahead of the notified reporting time. On exam day, their responsibilities include checking candidate identity verification and frisking procedures, monitoring seating arrangements, and overseeing the distribution and collection of examination material.
They will also check that CCTV cameras and webcasting are working, that electricity backup is available, and that the centre follows the prescribed procedures. Any irregularity, security lapse or case of malpractice has to be reported straight to the NTA, and a report must be submitted through the agency’s portal after the examination.
Observers may also be asked to give clarifications or take part in enquiry proceedings linked to their assigned centres for up to 12 months after the examination.
