Diwali 2026 will be remembered at Maruti Suzuki showrooms for one number: 30,000. On Dhanteras, Friday, the country’s largest carmaker handed over around 30,000 cars to customers in a single day, its biggest one-day delivery performance of the festive season. Showrooms stayed open late into the night as buyers queued to drive home their new cars on the auspicious day.
The rush did not come out of nowhere. It was the peak of a festive run that began with Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14 and has now carried Maruti Suzuki past 4 lakh retail sales, a 17 per cent jump over the same period last year.
A single day, 30,000 keys handed over
Maruti Suzuki confirmed the figure through Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales. He said the company delivered 30,000 vehicles in a single day, and cautioned against a direct comparison with last year because Dhanteras fell over two days in 2025.
Teams worked through the night to match dispatches with production, even as waiting periods stayed high for popular models. Dealer inventory at the end of October stood at just 12 days.
The Diwali season runs through Bhai Dooj and Labh Pancham, which falls on November 14, and Maruti Suzuki expects retail sales to grow 12 to 15 per cent across the extended festive period.
The festive run so far: over 4 lakh cars and counting
What makes this Dhanteras special is that it capped weeks of steady demand rather than a one-day spike. From Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14 to November 6, Maruti Suzuki recorded retail sales of over 4 lakh vehicles, against 3.46 lakh units in the same stretch last year.
A few factors lined up in the industry’s favour this year:
- Festive buying around Navratri, Dussehra and Dhanteras, with Diwali falling today, November 8.
- GST 2.0 rate cuts and lower interest rates, which made cars cheaper to buy and finance.
- Fresh models and updates, including the new Baleno and the Brezza, pulling buyers into showrooms.
- October wholesales for the whole passenger vehicle industry crossing 5 lakh units for the first time in a month.
October was a record month for the industry as well. Maruti Suzuki alone dispatched 2.12 lakh vehicles in October, up about 20 per cent from a year earlier, and Tata Motors, Hyundai and Kia all posted their best-ever monthly numbers.
Baleno and Brezza lead the rush
Two models did much of the heavy lifting. The Baleno, updated and launched on September 5, crossed 50,000 sales in less than two months. The Brezza went past 70,000 units in the same period, and both cars carry large pending order books.

The Baleno’s new CNG automatic variant, launched on September 18, now accounts for 28 per cent of all Baleno bookings, though the company says CNG kit supplies are still limited and it is early days for the variant. Supplies are expected to improve from January.
Rivals had a strong day too
Maruti Suzuki was not the only carmaker celebrating on Dhanteras. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles retailed around 12,000 units on the day, and Hyundai Motor India expects to deliver about 16,000 vehicles across Dhanteras and Diwali, a growth of almost 14 per cent over last year.
The wider industry is heading for a record year. Retail sales of all vehicles are expected to reach nearly 3.2 crore units in calendar year 2026, with passenger vehicles crossing 5 million units for the first time. Electric vehicles added to the cheer, with a record 3.55 lakh EVs sold in October, up 45 per cent from a year earlier.
The wait continues for buyers
The one number that tempers the celebration is 2.53 lakh, Maruti Suzuki’s pending bookings. Demand is still running ahead of supply, and around 1.2 to 1.25 lakh of those pending orders are for CNG vehicles alone.
For buyers, that means popular models will keep carrying waiting periods for a while yet. With Diwali deliveries continuing into this week, the 30,000-car day may soon look like the start of the story rather than the peak of it.
