Dalal Street had its Monday adrenaline moment early in the session, and it came from an NBFC. Poonawalla Fincorp’s shares shot up close to 8% in early trade as investors digested the company’s September quarter numbers: a profit that multiplied nearly five times from a year ago.

The stock jumped to Rs 483.95 against the previous close of Rs 448.05, and the action was not limited to the price. More than 15 million shares changed hands in the first 45 minutes of trade alone, with the transaction value crossing Rs 716 crore. For a lender that spent the last year rebuilding credibility, this was a loud endorsement from the market.

What the numbers actually say

For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, Poonawalla Fincorp reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 374.85 crore, a rise of roughly 405% from the Rs 74.20 crore it earned in the same quarter last year. Sequentially too, profit climbed 21.8% from Rs 307.71 crore in the June quarter.

Total income surged 70.1% year on year to Rs 2,625 crore, up from Rs 1,543 crore a year ago. The engine behind it was straightforward: interest income jumped to Rs 2,416 crore from Rs 1,402 crore in the year-ago period. Net interest income grew 12.3% over the previous quarter to Rs 1,589 crore, and the net interest margin improved 16 basis points sequentially to 9.26%.

Return on assets strengthened to 2.18%, and the company said assets under management stood at Rs 74,008 crore at the end of September, with new products contributing 18% of that book. Newer lending verticals, the management said, are showing pricing power alongside the core book.

Asset quality is quietly getting better

Buried in the earnings release is the number that risk-conscious investors care about most. Gross non-performing assets fell to 1.20% in the quarter from 1.37% in the June quarter. Net NPAs slipped to 0.61% from 0.70%. The direction, two quarters in a row, is down.

The capital cushion looks comfortable as well. The capital adequacy ratio stood at 18.68%, with Tier-1 capital at 17.15%, both well above the regulatory requirement of 15%. That leaves the company room to grow the loan book without needing to raise equity in a hurry.

One other line from the filing caught attention: the company added 42 new AI projects during the quarter, taking the total to 143, of which 84 have been implemented. NBFCs are racing to automate underwriting, collections and customer servicing, and Poonawalla Fincorp is clearly spending to stay in that race.

Why the street is suddenly excited

The five-fold profit jump flatters partly because last year’s base was low, but the sequential improvement across the board tells a cleaner story: margins expanding, bad loans shrinking, and disbursement momentum intact. Brokerage commentary over the weekend largely read the print as an inflection, not a one-off.

Technically, the stock has been consolidating between Rs 425 and Rs 505 in recent sessions. Analysts tracking the counter note that Rs 505 remains the line in the sand. A decisive move above it, they say, could pull in fresh buying momentum. Until then, the stock is likely to stay range-bound, though today is testing the upper edge of that range.

The market cap has climbed past Rs 40,400 crore, and the stock is up around 32% so far this year, a figure that puts it among the better-performing financial names of 2026.

What to watch next

  • Whether loan growth keeps pace as the base gets bigger, especially in the newer product lines that now make up nearly a fifth of the AUM.
  • How the margin trajectory holds as competition in retail lending intensifies and funding costs move.
  • The pace of asset-quality improvement; another clean quarter would cement the turnaround narrative.
  • Commentary from the management on credit costs and collection efficiency in the second half.

The board also approved the re-appointment of Kemisha Soni as an independent director, a housekeeping move that keeps the governance structure steady at a time when the company is scaling up.
